PACUCOA gives recognition to SDCA for passing Level I Accreditation Status
by Michael Abarro

The Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities – Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) formally recognized St. Dominic College of Asia’s (SDCA) Level I Accreditation Status after giving the college a Certificate of Accreditation, revealed June 4 during the Pasa-lubong 2013 ceremony.

Dr. Gregorio A. Andaman Jr., SDCA President, together with Dr. Nilda W. Balsicas, Vice President for Academics and Research, and school administrators unveiled a Seal of Excellence during the annual welcome ceremony attended mostly by new Dominican students.

The Benefits
In a message by Dr. Balsicas, she stated that with the accreditation, SDCA will enjoy benefits such as partial autonomy in revising its own educational curriculum, priority in funding assistance from the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Development Fund for Scholarships and Faculty Development, and authority to graduate students without prior approval from the commission.

Other benefits such as full administrative deregulation, financial deregulation in terms of setting tuition and other school fees and charges and limited visitation and inspection by PACUCOA all serve to gradually grant SDCA academic autonomy free from supervision due to its heightening standard in education and research. When fully accredited, SDCA will be able to exercise full independence in implementing its own curriculum to better suit the needs of its students and be able to come on par with the country’s leading educational institution.

What will be done
In the same message by Dr. Balsicas, she stated that the Office of Academics and Research will “undertake activities to ensure quality teaching and quality learning,” in accordance to the Level I PACUCOA Accreditation “to show how serious we are in providing quality education to (our) students.” Plans to conduct an impact study of the K-12 program implementation on SDCA’s curriculum and to conduct studies related to the institutional research agenda are to be implemented, in effort to turn SDCA into a competent research institution. Plans to provide faculty seminars to address the improvement of classroom instruction to ensure its excellent delivery and the plans to update the institution’s Performance Appraisal Instrument in accordance with the indicators of effective classroom teaching will serve to improve the quality of SDCA’s education in the classroom and the institution overall.
