Hey Ugly!

By John Michael O. Samuel

Yeah, you’re ugly. You know you are, and so do I. You wouldn’t be reading this article—not even the first word—if your ego is so high up into the heavens and you believe that you actually look good.  You saw the title and read this article, mainly because there is a certain point in you that you believe is ugly.

Your teeth are out of shape. Your nose doesn’t have a bridge or your nose is just too big. You have large pores. Your face is infested with zits; you pop them once in a while. You have unnecessary wrinkles.  Your eye bags are darker than a black hole. You don’t like the color of your eyes. Your hair is too curly or your hair is too straight, and you don’t even like its color. You don’t like it that way. You straighten it, you curl it, you dye it, and, eventually, the ends will split.

You weigh tons. You’re not sexy. You have curves, a few pairs on your sides in the form of flabs. You don’t have well-chiseled abs.  You try to get on a diet but you just can’t do it. Your biceps aren’t that big. Or perhaps you’re too thin. You’re a skeleton, anytime now someone will push you with his finger and you would fall and break. You don’t like your skin. You don’t have fair skin or you don’t have that glowing tan skin. You buy whatever skin supplement or cream that you need to achieve that skin tone that you want to have, that’s if you have the money. Unfortunately, you don’t.

You look old. You want to look young. You look too young, you want to look old.  What the heck do you people want? You’re ugly. (Add more things that you have that you don’t really want to have and you want to change).

People are always never satisfied with what they have, including you —especially you, if you agree to at least one of those things that I said.  If I hurt your feelings, I apologize. People always look for something they could barely find and are displeased whenever they don’t get it.  It’s almost the same with our school. You ask, how?

Well, we students always complain with something, don’t we? Almost every day you would hear someone cursing the school and blaming all those people who administrate it. And one of the very simple reasons why we students do that a lot because we are not satisfied with it—and sometimes we tend to become overly dissatisfied and can’t even appreciate the things that we have.

When the school asks us to pay for something, we complain.  When there’s a long queue at the cashier, we complain.  When the school doesn’t suspend classes early enough due to inclement weather, we complain.  When the school did suspend classes but it’s not even raining, we’d say, “Suspended nga, tirik naman ang araw.”  When a professor teaches like he doesn’t know anything, we complain.  When professor is good, it turns out the professor is too good that he gives you grades that aren’t high enough for you, we complain.

You may now think of the times that you complained about the school and include that in the list.
All I want to ask is that when are we going to, if not stop at least, diminish the times that we make complaints?  Or instead of making complaints, why not make a suggestion? Sometimes we need to learn to accept and appreciate the things that we have, whether we like it or not, instead of just blabbering about things that you want that are not even possible.

When the school asks you to pay for something, then go, we can’t do anything anyway. When there’s a long queue, take your chances and look for a time period when there isn’t any queue. Oh, hell with the suspension of class.  Whatever kind of professor you encounter, ride with him, go with his flow.  If you have curly hair, face it, it’ll be curly until the end of time.  If you want to lose weight, you would’ve done that ages ago.  If your teeth are out of shape, just keep smiling; a smile is a smile wherever you go.

Considering that this article is a complaint against human behavior, I feel like I’m battling with myself. Anyway, just remember to appreciate and accept the things you have. Wordy complaints aren’t the solution to our problems, actions will. And this article is the action I want to do.
